PREVENTING INFECTIONS

Fighting infection in a nursing home is everyone's responsibility. CNAs can do their part by being aware of infection control measures. Follow the tips below to keep infections at bay:

* Watch for and report early signs of infections in residents

* Keep resident areas clean <li>Keep equipment such as comodes, bedpans, and emesis basins emptied, clean, and in their proper places

* Do not breathe into residents' faces

* Do not shake linen

* Do not carry soiled linen next to your uniform

* Keep residents' water pitchers clean and do not switch them from resident to resident

* Keep food covered until served

* Pick up eating utensils by the handles

* Do not touch the inner surface of plates and glasses when serving food and drink

* Encourage and assist residents to maintain an adequate fluid and nutritional intake

* Report to the charge nurse when residents change eating or drinking patterns

* Attend to residents' personal hygiene needs, bathing, and oral care

* Store toothbrushes properly
