RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND HEALTHCARE

LTC Nursing Assistant Trainer, February 22, 2006

Spirituality is a person's beliefs about the purpose or meaning of life. Religion is a belief in a devine power or being. Our feelings about health and healing are often intertwined with our faith. CNA's should recognize their residents' spiritual and religious choices in a supportive way. To do this, follow the plan below:

* Inquire: If you are unfamiliar with your residents' religions, ask what practices may affect their care. Also ask about important holidays they observe.

* Plan: Organize residents' care around any religious services they wish to attend. Put in residents' care plans any religious services they like to watch on television or listen to on the radio.

* Notify: Contact appropriate clergy when residents request visits.

* Listen: Pay attention when residents wish to discuss their beliefs.

* Participate: If it doesn't contradict your own beliefs, be willing to read from residents' religious books or participate in prayer if they request it.
