ENCOURAGE EATING

LTC Nursing Assistant Trainer, February 1, 2006

A lack of appetite is one reason why residents may not eat well. Illness, lack of exercise, special diets, and cultural habits may contribute to a decreased desire to eat. CNAs can help residents with their mealtime eating habits by encouraging them in the following ways:

* Make certain residents have their teeth in place and their glasses on, if they use them.

* Remind residents to take another bite.

* Ask if there is something about the food that they do not like. If so, arrange for the dietician to talk with the residents.

* Talk with residents while they eat.

* Do not remove the food until you are certain that they will not eat anymore.

* Do not rush them or appear to be rushed yourself.
