STRENGTHENING OBSERVATIONAL SKILLS

LTC Nursing Assistant Trainer, January 18, 2006

Because CNAs are the likely caregiver to interact the most with residents, it's important that they hone their observation skills. CNAs should observe residents during any contact. When observing, look and listen for both signs and symptoms:

Signs can be seen or measured, such as temperature, swelling, or redness.

Symptoms are descriptions from the residents, such as pain, nausea, or dizziness.

Make observations of any signs or symptoms of problems with residents' body functions and mental status. In addition to your own observations, listen to what residents say about these areas.
