Handwashing is the single most effective method to control the spread of infection. Many residents become ill, and some die, as a result of infections they contract while in a nursing home.

It is not necessary to use very hot water for proper handwashing. What is important is that the soap is spread completely over the hands.

CNAs should wash their hands at the following times:

* On arrival and before departing the nursing home

* Before and after eating

* After bathroom use

* Before and after each patient contact

* Before and after using gloves
