Diarrhea is the rapid movement of fecal matter through the intestines, resulting in the frequent evacuation of watery stools. Diarrhea is a concern for everyone-and especially the elderly-because it affects the body's ability to absorb nutrients. Elimination patterns vary, but no one should have diarrhea all the time. If you notice a resident has frequent diarrhea, tell your supervisor.

There are a number of possible causes of diarrhea, including:

  • intestinal infections
  • toxins
  • loss of segments of the intestines
  • emotional disorders that result in increased peristalsis and increased secretion of mucus by the intestines
  • diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease
  • concentrated tube feedings, if adequate water is not given after each feeding

Dietary changes, relaxation, medications, and surgery may be used to treat diarrhea. Nursing care measures include the following:

  • toileting as necessary
  • thorough cleaning of the peri-anal area
  • application of skin barrier cream
