Injuries to nursing home residents are frequently related to resident walking, also known as ambulation. When attempting to ambulate, some residents do not want help because they:

think they do not need it
do not want to bother anyone
become confused and forget they need assistance
are too impatient to wait for help from a staff member

A staff member should accompany unsteady residents who use walkers to ensure they do not encounter any hazardous conditions along the way. Here are some measures you can take to prevent injuries for those residents:

Consider the resident's size, weight, and physical condition and ask another staff member to help you if you need it
Make sure the tips of the walker legs have the proper coverings
Teach residents to use the walker correctly
Ensure the resident is wearing non-skid footwear
Use a gait belt to steady the resident
Follow the resident with a wheelchair, if necessary
Make sure the resident does not have loose clothing that could trip him or her
