Being a CNA is a very stressful job. Healthcare workers are much more likely to suffer from "burnout," or physical, mental, or emotional exhaustion, than other professionals. It's important to keep a close eye on stress levels of your facility's caregivers because stress negatively affects a person's health. Have CNAs review the following list of stress symptoms and help them decide if they are overstressed:

Physical symptoms

  • Frequent headaches or migraines
  • Tension in the head, neck, and shoulders
  • Upset stomach
  • Feeling tired or worn out
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Grinding teeth
  • Racing heart
  • Frequent colds or flu
  • Proneness to accidents

Mental symptoms

  • Negative attitudes
  • Making negative statements about yourself
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Forgetful
  • Easily confused
  • Finding it difficult to get interested in events or hobbies

Emotional symptoms

  • Constant worrying
  • Frequent feelings of discouragement or depression
  • Feelings of anxiousness
  • Becoming easily frustrated and irritated
  • Feelings of worthlessness
  • Having nightmares

Review and discuss these symptoms with your facility's staff. Help any staff member in need by showing them distressing techniques such as slow, deep breathing.
