There are many different causes of paralysis, such as major accidents,
birth injuries, diseases, or strokes. Many times, major nerve damage
occurs following such events, causing victims to become dependent on their caregivers. Many residents with paralysis need help with toileting and
skin care as it relates to immobility. CNAs should practice the following
care measures

For pressure ulcers:
- Observe and report any signs of skin breakdown
- Keep the skin clean and dry
- Change the resident's position frequently
- Ensure adequate nutrition

For bladder problems:
- Schedule regular visits to the toilet
- Offer plenty of liquids to maintain adequate fluid levels
- Record intake and output
- Observe for signs of urinary tract infection
- Practice good skin care

For bowel problems:
- Help the resident stay hydrated
- Consistently bring him or her to the bathroom
- Keep skin clean and dry
- Make sure the resident gets enough fiber
