As you well know, falls can be very dangerous for the frail elderly. Falls can cause fractures, which make residents more vulnerable to infections, pressure ulcers, and muscle weakening, leading to deterioration in their conditions.

Falls in facilities most commonly occur when a resident attempts to get out of bed or a chair on his or her own. Review the following reasons falls occur:

- Bowel and bladder needs

- Hunger

- Thirst

- Pain or discomfort

- Confusion due to infection

- Agitation, dizziness, or blood pressure changes caused by medications

- Loneliness, boredom, and fear

Remind CNAs why falls happen and share ways to address these potential problems before an injury occurs.
