Antipsychotic meds being heavily prescribed for PBA residents

Residents with symptoms of pseudobulbar affect (PBA) make up about 10% of the SNF population. PBA is a neurological conditions that causes uncontrollable and exaggerated crying or laughing. A study sponsored by Avanir Pharmaceuticals and published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry assessed MDS 3.0 information for 811 resident across nine nursing home in Michigan. It found PBA patients were twice as likely to be given antipsychotic medications for off-label reasons than their counterparts.
