Do we have to discharge a resident if he has been in the ER for more than 48 hours?

Q: A newly admitted resident went out to the emergency room (ER) for an observation period that lasted for more than 48 hours, between 3/14- 3/15, and was before the five-day assessment was completed. The resident returned to the facility on 3/16. Do we start a new PPS cycle? Or do or just continue with the five-day assessment from the initial admission? What is the time frame for an observation period before they can be considered discharged from the facility?
