Q: I work in Pennsylvania and the use of V-codes has been an ongoing issue in this area. With the implementation of the MDS 3.0, it has become a bigger question. Do you know if the use of V-codes is acceptable on the MDS and on the UB-04? Our billing department receives denials for claims with V-codes. However, during training for the MDS 3.0 and RUG-IV, we were instructed that V-codes are necessary for proper reimbursement. V-codes are also sometimes the only diagnosis that appropriately supports the skilled service. However, in this state V-codes are still denied and frowned upon.
