Cancer develops when normal body cells turn into abnormal, malignant cells. Normally, cells divide to produce more cells only when they are needed. Abnormal cells, however, divide even when the body does not need the new ones. These cells grow into a tissue mass, called a tumor. Some tumors are benign, or noncancerous; others are malignant, or cancerous.
