White House reveals health insurance Web site

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, July 8, 2010

The Obama administration introduced HealthCare.gov on June 30. The new site, which was authorized in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), aims to provide Americans with information on public and private health insurance options available to them based on their specific needs and individual circumstances. Visitors to the site do not need to enter their name or income. Instead, coverage option lists are created depending on age, job status, Zip code, and degree of difficulty affording health insurance, according to The Washington Post.

The site includes roughly 5,500 private plans. Federal and state programs (i.e., Medicare and Medicaid) may also be offered as potential coverage options. Because various parts of the PPACA take effect at different times in the years ahead, the site shows users how each option will change in accordance with the new law. Perhaps the most consumer-friendly feature of the new site is its ability to provide users with side-by-side comparisons of each available option, which will include prices for each plan beginning in October.
