Berwick’s nomination causes Republican outcries

It appears Dr. Donald Berwick’s confirmation as the next CMS administrator could take some time. Republicans are taking a strong stance against his nomination, citing Berwick’s views on Britain’s National Health Service (N.H.S.) and what his feelings on rationing healthcare could mean to the future of the U.S. health system. The GOP is also using Berwick’s nomination to reiterate their concerns regarding the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to The New York Times.
In 2008, Berwick voiced his love for the N.H.S. and said it should be considered "a global treasure." Republicans like Senator Charles Grassley have conceded that Berwick’s qualifications meet the job requirements, but they argue that his comments on rationing healthcare and capping health spending need to explained in greater detail.
