In an ideal world, SNF billing office staff would rarely interact with beneficiary notices. Beneficiary notices are complicated. Facilities need to understand when each notice must be issued, depending on specific situations and scenarios. The revised SNF advance beneficiary notice (ABN), which CMS said during the March 11 Open Door Forum would be released this summer, will simplify the beneficiary notice process under Medicare Part A by eliminating the potential for choice on the part of providers. Once finalized, the revised ABN will do away with the need for noncoverage letters and will be the only option available for SNFs.
