Despite industry concerns, genetic testing kits hit the market

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, May 13, 2010

On May 14, the first major U.S. retail chain will begin selling genetic testing kits. Insight personal genetic testing kits, manufactured by Pathway Genomics, aim to assess an individual’s risk of developing a number of health conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, and obesity, by screening for genetic markers. Priced at $20 to $30, the kit includes a vial and a shipping envelope. Consumers send a saliva sample to Pathway, which posts results online. Depending on the test type, the online report costs anywhere from $79 to $179, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Pathway insists that the test meets all federal regulations. Nonetheless, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is looking into the medical claims made in the product’s marketing material. Scientists, bio-ethicists, and genetic counselors have expressed concerns over personal genetic testing. Many fear that consumers will misunderstand the test’s results because they are so open to interpretation. Consumers are encouraged to discuss their results with a genetic counselor or doctor.
