Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, April 22, 2010

Since 2006, the position of CMS administrator has been occupied through temporary appointments. But given the agency’s critical role in healthcare reform and executing the initiatives outlined in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, President Obama made filling the position permanently a serious priority. On April 19, he announced Donald Berwick, MD, as his nominee, according to The Washington Post.

Berwick is a Harvard University professor who co-founded the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in 1991. He is well-known for his work in improving patient care, and is highly regarding by many in the healthcare industry. As a result, many believe his confirmation should go smoothly. The first step in the process for Berwick is an appearance before the Senate Finance Committee.
