MedPAC releases March report to Congress

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, March 11, 2010

On March 1, the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) sent its semi-annual Medicare Payment Policy report to Congress. The 381-page document, which is issued in March and June, includes chapters on hospice, SNF, home health, inpatient rehabilitation, and long-term care hospital services.

In the SNF services section, Chapter 3A, MedPAC recommends that Congress eliminates the updates to payment rates for fiscal year (FY) 2011. The rates are measured by the SNF market basket, which is projected to be 2.2% in 2011. The commission estimates that SNF payments will be able to accommodate changes in cost at the 2010 payment levels. In eradicating the update, MedPAC states that Medicare costs would be reduced by $250-$750 million for FY 2011 without affecting beneficiary access or SNFs’ ability to provide proper care.
