White House releases modified healthcare overhaul initiative

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, February 25, 2010

Posted February 22 on the White House Web site, President Obama issued his own unique healthcare proposal. The move comes three days before a televised meeting that is aimed at returning both parties to healthcare reform discussion, a topic largely avoided since the Republican’s special election victory in Massachusetts several weeks ago. The president’s plan is based primarily on the legislation passed by the Senate in December, according to The New York Times.

The proposal includes the elimination of the "doughnut hole" coverage gap in Medicare Part D. In addition, it contains the Community Living Assistance Services and Supports (CLASS) Act, which is present in the Senate bill and is intended to provide an affordable, voluntary long-term care insurance option for all Americans. President Obama’s plan also includes a transparency agenda that focuses on increasing the availability of information pertaining to nursing homes.
