GOP win in Massachusetts thickens national healthcare reform plot

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, January 21, 2010

With his upset victory, Scott Brown became the first Bay State Republican elected to the US Senate since 1972, according to The Boston Globe. Initially thought to have little chance of defeating Democrat Martha Coakley, the state’s attorney general, Brown rode a recent wave of enthusiasm from independent voters to win the seat held by Senator Edward Kennedy from 1962 until his death last August.

It was Kennedy who often paced Congress in regards to healthcare reform. His successor, however, may be the deciding vote in derailing the Democratic-led healthcare overhaul initiative, as Brown will likely end the Democrats filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. As a result, the future of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is in question.
