IFAS report finds most nursing homes do not offer end-of-life programs

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, January 7, 2010

The Institute for the Future of Aging Services (IFAS), the research division of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, recently released a report stating less then 20% of nursing homes participate in end-of-life care programs. IFAS’ findings are based on data from the 2004 National Nursing Home Survey, which is made up of information from 16,000 U.S. nursing homes.

According to researchers, nursing homes are more likely to offer end-of-life programs if they also provide programs for hospice, dementia care, or pain management. The report, which can be found on the IFAS Web site, also highlights a correlation between end-of-life program participation and staff training for related services.
