Iowa hospital sues nearby nursing home
Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, December 31, 2009
Broadlawns Medical Center, the public hospital in Polk County, Iowa, is suing Granger Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, alleging that the nursing home unlawfully transferred a brain damaged resident to the hospital, according to The Des Moines Register.
Edward Weatherman was sent from Granger to Broadlawns in October 2008. The nursing home refused to take him back, the lawsuit says, and Weatherman died in the hospital about six months later. Granger, which is owned by the Texas-based company, Preferred Care Partners Management Group, denies any wrongdoing. The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals is looking into the allegation; should it find fault with the nursing home’s actions, the department could issue fines. Broadlawns’ lawsuit asks for $76,000 for cost-reimbursement, as well as punitive damages.
