CLASS Act continues to fuel division on the Hill

The proposed creation of a federal long-term care insurance program, modeled after late Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy’s Community Living Assistance Services and Support (CLASS) Act, is creating quite a bit of friction in the growing Senate debate over healthcare reform legislation, according to The New York Times.
The program, which has the support of President Barack Obama, is backed by most Democrats, who stress that the need to provide seniors and disabled Americans with a system for long-term care financial assistance is exemplified by the aging baby boomer generation. Others, however, cite the potential for massive costs because those likely to sign up would be individuals who have or expect health problems. As a result, Republicans and a handful of Democrats worry that the program would become unsustainable.
