Impact of H1N1 virus now expected to be mild
Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, December 10, 2009
The swine flu pandemic was anticipated to have extreme effects during this year’s flu season, but it is now expected to be less severe than originally thought, a new joint American-British study found. The most recent detailed data has allowed researchers to measure the virus’ impact, which has been serious but mild overall, according to U.S. News & World Report.
Authors of the study, which includes Marc Lipsitch, professor of epidemiology at Harvard School of Public Health, analyzed the virus in the U.S. using statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They also took a look at data from the cities of New York and Milwaukee and made their projections based on the number of hospitalizations and deaths attributed to H1N1.
