Prevalence of diabetes to drastically increase

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, December 3, 2009

A new report estimates that over the next 25 years, the number of Americans suffering from diabetes will nearly double and cost of caring for those individuals will likely triple due to increased life spans and the disease’s long-term complications, according to The New York Times.

The projections, which can be found in the December issue of Diabetes Care, suggest that just over 44 million Americans will have diabetes by 2034. Currently, 23.7 million suffer from the disease. These calculations consider the fact that diabetes is being discovered and diagnosed in younger Americans.
