GOP focuses on Medicare as Senate health bill debate commences

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, December 3, 2009

Senator John McCain of Arizona offered the Republican’s first health bill amendment proposal, which would return the more than $450 billion to Medicare that had been cut from the program in an attempt to reduce the bill’s overall cost, according to The New York Times.

As a result, his proposal would completely dismantle the bill. The reductions in Medicare costs are the backbone of the Democrats’ plan to offset the expenses from expanding insurance coverage to an additional 30 million Americans. Senator Ben Nelson, a Democrat from Nebraska, plans on offering three amendments, including one that would eliminate the long-term care federal insurance program proposed in the bill.
