Improve accuracy when coding activities of daily living

Coding activities of daily living (ADL) in Section G of the MDS 2.0 is an ongoing problem for many SNFs, and inaccuracies can have a negative effect on care planning, quality indicators, quality measures, and reimbursement.
“ADL coding is a challenge because all the CNAs and nurses who care for a resident must have the same understanding of each activity and how the resident’s and their own actions translate into self-performance and support codes,” says Sarah Riggin, RN, RAC-MT, CRNAC, C-NE, MDS nurse consultant at LTC Systems in Conway, AR. “However, ADL training does not have to be a nightmare.”
SNFs can improve the accuracy of ADL coding by ensuring that all staff members know the exact ADL definitions, simplifying the instructions, and providing tips and hands-on training to help staff members understand important coding information.
