Senate bill to include long-term care insurance program

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, November 19, 2009

The Senate health bill, which was drafted using the two bills that previously passed through Senate committees, is expected to contain a new long-term care insurance program, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The provision initially appeared in late Senator Edward Kennedy’s Community Living Assistance Services and Supports (CLASS) Act. The House health bill includes a similar provision. Under the proposed program, which would make long-term care insurance available to all employees, individuals would be free to decline participation. Premiums would be deducted from the paychecks of those who chose to take advantage of the program.
