CMS releases influenza vaccine payment allowances for the 2009-2010 season

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released Transmittal 1824 October 2, informing providers of the Medicare Part B payment allowances for seasonal influenza vaccines.
The payment allowances for influenza vaccines are based on 95% of the average wholesale price and updated on an annual basis effective September 1. The payment allowances for influenza vaccines administered during the 2009-2010 season are as follows:
- CPT 90655 is $15.447
- CPT 90656 is $12.541
- CPT 90657 is $5.684
- CPT 90658 is $11.368
FluMist, a nasal influenza vaccine, (CPT 90660) may be covered by Medicare Part B if the local claims processing contractor determines it is medically reasonable and necessary for the Medicare beneficiary. When this vaccine is covered, the payment allowance for CPT 90660 is $22.316.
