Hundreds of nursing homes left off poor performance list

A report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) says hundreds of less than satisfactory nursing homes ought to be included in CMS’ Special Focus Facility (SFF) program, which currently consists of only 136 facilities nationwide that are closely monitored due to poor performance.

The GAO recommends adding 444 nursing homes – most of which were chain-affiliated but not named in the report – to the program, and encourages CMS to reform the process for identifying potential SFF nursing homes. To calculate which homes ought to comprise the SFF program the GAO used the CMS Five-Star Quality Rating System, took a close look at facility history, and placed extra weight on potential for resident harm deficiencies. As it stands, the program includes at least one nursing home from every state (except Alaska), but does not qualify SFFs based on national performance, a provision that the GAO says it would like to see changed.
