Federal court documents cite six Wisconsin nursing homes and a pharmaceutical company for potentially illicit prescription drug distribution. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is investigating whether the nursing homes provided drugs such as Fentanyl and OxyContin from an emergency kit without a doctor’s authorization, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Online.
The emergency kit and its contents are intended to be used only when a resident is waiting for a prescription to be filled or when a doctor is unavailable to administer care. When a kit is used, required paperwork must be filed. But according to a DEA affidavit, neither the nursing homes nor the kit suppliers, PharMerica, submitted the proper documentation.
