CMS recently released a brief fact sheet, available on their Web site, in the hope of further explaining the changes that will be taking place due to the implementation of ICD-10 in October 2013. The goal of the upgrade from ICD-9 is to improve payment practices and allow for greater medical evaluation, according to CMS.
The four-page document explains the advantages of ICD-10 and describes the two parts of this new classification system, Clinical Modification (CM) and the Procedure Coding System (PCS). The document also lists example ICD-10 codes and the currently used ICD-9 counterparts, highlighting the enhanced precision of the new system. In addition, the sheet includes structural changes and a handful of tips that facilities can follow in preparing for ICD-10 implementation.
