An August 25 report from the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology advises Americans to take action in preparing for this year’s flu season, stating that almost half of the U.S. population could contract the H1N1 virus (also known as the swine flu) and as many as 90,000 could die as a result, according to ABC News.

In a worst-case scenario, up to 120 million Americans could become ill thanks to the swine flu, with another 30 million getting the virus but lacking symptoms. The high number of potential deaths, which is twice as much as the annual average associated with flu season, is especially threatening to people over 65. But according to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, the swine flu is strange as it has yet to seriously affect seniors. Still the report warns that everyone should get the vaccine, which is expected to be ready in October.
