Ratings are improvement, but consumers want more

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, July 16, 2009

It’s been six months since CMS launched its five-star quality rating system on Nursing Home Compare, and industry representatives and consumer groups continue to question the initiative’s accuracy and effectiveness, according to The Washington Post and Kaiser Health News.

Both parties agree that the system’s method of measuring staffing, which is viewed as the top quality of care indicator by the two sides, needs work. The numbers provided often fail to capture the frequent employment changes at many facilities. Consumers rely on staff to resident ratios, but also want to see more state inspection results, in addition to the verification of employee information given by facilities. As a result, Congress may require nursing homes to electronically report their payroll data every two weeks.
