Pressure-relieving mattresses for all New Jersey nursing homes
Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, July 2, 2009
A new bill, signed by New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine in April, will require the state’s nursing homes to have pressure-relieving mattresses that prevent bedsores by 2012, according to Albert L. Buzzetti & Associates.
Pressure ulcers form as a result of sustained pressure on the skin that compresses blood vessels and prevents nutrition and oxygen from reaching skin cells. Over time, skin tissue dies and pressure ulcers develop. Skin tissue is under pressure where the bones press against it, especially when the weight of the body or a body part pushes down on a pressure point.
Nursing homes must begin providing pressure-relieving mattresses, which redistribute residents’ weight away from areas more susceptible to pressure ulcers, within a year after the bill’s signing, according to Albert L. Buzzetti & Associates.
