Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) recently introduced a bill that would expand the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission’s (MedPAC) power into the executive branch of the government by making the commission responsible for setting Medicare reimbursement rates, according to The Washington Post.
Currently, Congress makes decisions about the reimbursement rates for Medicare. However, the correlation between Medicare reimbursement and quality of care has weakened in recent years, leading some people to question whether Congress is the best authority for this role. Rockefeller, who proposes to model MedPAC after the Federal Reserve Board, believes that we must put the responsibility for setting Medicare reimbursement rates in the hands of healthcare experts, according to The Washington Post.
