California nursing homes may be required to display star ratings

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, January 29, 2009

Five Los Angeles County supervisors have proposed that all nursing homes in the state of California receiving Medicare or Medi-Cal display their star rating on site, according to the Los Angeles Times. If the proposal is passed, the state’s nursing homes would also be required to disclose star rating information to all new patients in their admissions agreements.

Although the proposal has not been well received by many nursing homes, patient advocates, and others who believe the five-star rating system is flawed, the supervisors seek support from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and state health department officials, reports the Los Angeles Times.
