Currently, the ICD-9-CM consists of approximately 13,000 diagnosis codes. The ICD-10-CM, which the United States plans to adopt in the near future, will increase the number of diagnosis codes to 68,000.
Although the proposed implementation date for the ICD-10-CM is not until 2013, SNF billers need to begin preparing for the new clinical modification coding system.
“The ICD-10-CM will require a certain level of specialty,” says Donna Collins, regional manager of clinical reimbursement at Landmark Health Solutions in Haverhill, MA. “Billers need to fine-tune their coding skills as soon as possible.”
