Counting the minutes: Ensure accurate Part B billing for timed and untimed therapy codes

The incorrect calculation of therapy units has led to many Part B billing errors for SNFs, and as CMS works to reduce improper Medicare payments, federal scrutiny of this problematic procedure intensifies.

Unlike Part A, Part B has strict billing requirements for timed and untimed therapy codes, and minutes of timed therapy must be converted into units. Unfortunately, tracking and calculating therapy units is an ongoing challenge for SNFs, and Part B billing errors can result in under- or overpayments. The Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) demonstration found a considerable number of errors by SNFs and hospitals in billing therapy units, highlighting the need for increased attention.
