Billing for PEN: Don’t feed into the hype

Despite common beliefs, billing for parenteral and enteral nutrition (PEN) is not exceedingly difficult, and SNFs can bring in a considerable amount of revenue by billing Part B for these supplies.

When a SNF resident receives PEN, the facility can bill for tubing, feeding supply and nutrition kits, formulas, infusion pumps, and other items necessary to deliver nutrients. Unfortunately, SNF business departments are often unfamiliar with the proper billing procedure for PEN and do not submit claims. Instead, facilities reach agreements with outside vendors to provide PEN supplies and bill Part B. By giving billing responsibilities to a vendor, SNFs are also handing over their right to profits from the supplies.
