Under the MDS 3.0, staff are required to conduct the Brief Interview for Mental Status (BIMS) for all residents who are able to complete the interview. However, for residents who are rarely or never understood, staff should complete the staff assessment for mental status.
This assessment incorporates the following items, which were included under the MDS 2.0:
- C0700 Short-term Memory OK (Correlates with MDS 2.0 Item B2a)
- C0800 Long-term Memory OK (Correlates with B2b)
- C0900 Memory/Recall Ability (Correlates with B3)
- C1000 Cognitive Skills for Daily Decision Making (Correlates with B4)
Long-term care providers should be familiar with those items, but the MDS 3.0 staff assessment for mental status includes one new item, C1100, Procedural Memory. Become familiar with item C1100 before the MDS 3.0 goes into effect. You can see C1100 under the Draft MDS 3.0 Item Set.
