Alzheimer's genes identified

Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, January 8, 2009

On January 5, researchers at the University of Miami announced they have identified nine genes that may play a role in Alzheimer’s disease, according to the Miami Herald. The research revealed that the presence of these identified genes is more frequent in people with Alzheimer’s than in people without the disease.

Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease but, if diagnosed early, it can be treated. With genetic testing, people can identify the presence of these genes and get a head start on prevention or treatment of Alzheimer’s disease with medication, diet, and lifestyle, according to the Miami Herald.
