Q: For those of us in Medicaid case-mix states who are required to have back-up documentation for MDS items, how would you advise handling this since so much of the new version is based on the interview?
Diane: The answer to your question will be determined by your state, so the first thing you should do is find out if your state is replacing its current MDS 2.0 data points with equivalent MDS 3.0 data points.
Your state has multiple options to capture Medicaid case-mix items once the industry begins using the MDS 3.0. Call your state Medicaid department to find out if it has developed a plan for the transition to the MDS 3.0 before you proceed with plans to capture back-up documentation.
