Using new methods to assess delirium

Although delirium is a common and serious problem among nursing home residents, this acute but subtle condition often goes undetected in nursing homes. Part of the reason may be that under the MDS 2.0, delirium assessments were difficult for nursing home staff members to use and relied on unstructured staff observations.
However, the MDS 3.0, which is expected to go into effect in October 2009, may include a better assessment for identifying delirium, called the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM).
