Benefits exhaust and no-pay bills continue to create problems for SNFs, and, this year, improper submission of these claims could attract federal attention.

To avoid unwanted attention, SNF billers must understand the different coding and submission processes for benefits exhaust and no-pay claims, work through lingering problems with their fiscal intermediaries (FI) or Medicare administrative contractors (MAC), and communicate effectively with the clinical staff about any changes in a resident’s status or level of care.
