CMS announces incentive program for electronic prescribing
Contemporary Long-Term Care Weekly, November 6, 2008
Physicians who begin using a qualified electronic prescribing system may receive an incentive payment of 2% of their total Medicare allowed charges next year, according to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule final rule for 2009.
Electronic prescribing can not only reduce medication mistakes, but can also minimize the out-of-pocket costs incurred by beneficiaries through better doctor-pharmacy communication about low-cost generic prescriptions.
According to CMS, a qualified electronic prescribing system must have the ability to do the following:
- Facilitate communication between the physician and pharmacy
- Aid in physician identification of appropriate drugs and low-cost alternatives
- Provide information on formulary and tiered formulary medications
- Generate alerts about possible adverse events, such as improper dosing, drug-to-drug interactions, or allergy concerns
