Q: The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) has added deep tissue injury and unstageable pressure ulcers to the four original pressure ulcer stages. But the draft MDS 3.0 data specifications only contain five stages. Will the deep tissue injury designation be included in the MDS 3.0?
A: The NPUAP continues to update the wound care identification process in accordance with standards of care. The panel released the new pressure ulcer standards in February 2007. Although CMS has adopted the unstageable pressure ulcer stage for 3.0, the new assessment does not contain the deep tissue injury stage. After CMS’ January 24 Special Open Door Forum on the MDS 3.0, I asked CMS officials this question and was told CMS would be taking the issue under advisement.
