Q. Some of the physicians we work with don’t like signing the physician certifications to verify that Medicare Part A residents require a skilled level of care, and they want to sign using signature stamps. Is this allowed?
A. No. Fiscal intermediaries and Part A/B Medicare administrative contractors will not accept stamped signatures on physician certifications or any other medical records during medical review. CMS recently issued a revision to the Medicare Program Integrity Manual to clarify signature requirements on medical records. The update primarily addressed hospice certifications, but it also provided an important clarification about stamped signatures for all healthcare providers, including skilled nursing facilities, that bill the Medicare program.
